Monday's Beauty Bits

I received my haul of Everyday Minerals goodies, I'll post reviews instead of an unpacking post. I've been kitting out a friend who's a novice in makeup with brushes, and Everyday Minerals seemed like the best, more affordable brushes obtainable. And of course I couldn't resist piggy backing a few things. In brief, I got myself a flat top and eye kabuki brush, two travelling jars (puff and swivel sifter), and a new free-sample kit to test new colours.

Tine's advice to use good-quality cotton struck home with me when I ran out of the Boots cotton I brought back from the UK. Mom handed me a pack of generic Guardian cotton pads. Euch! Cotton fluffs everywhere and sticks to me. I'm running out and getting decently quilted once ASAP.

I learnt that Clinique's Superfit Foundation is only RM73 in the US! It's about RM110 here - this is a terrible markup in price. I've begged a friend who's visiting NY to pick one up for me in Shell. Here's hoping he doesn't turn tail and run screaming at the imposing sight of Sephora...

Syen pointed out to me that brushes made from real-hair get split ends. o_0 well that explains the sorry state of my Mac blush brush, and blender brush. I'm moving on to good synthetic brushes now where I can. Cheaper, may last longer, and kinder on furry wee (and not so wee) creatures.

Both Syen and I made it to the Benefit warehouse sale in PJ Hilton. Since it's over, we have decided not to post a "warehouse haul" post, and just do review posts instead. Syen bought four lippies, and I got a powder box in Ten, a Betty Brushes Up bag (empty, no brushes, boo!), two creaseless cream eyeshadows, and one lipstick in Frenched - a true red 50s-style lippie that intimidates even me. Can't wait to see if I can get it to work though!

I have finally stopped trying to make pretty shimmery lipsticks work on me. They just plain don't. They seem to emphasise every wrinkle on my very wrinkly lips. I seem to have too much lip in too little space so it folded up accordian style, and shimmers just make it look more obvious. So I've made a policy to stick to sheer, non-shimmery lippies in a glossy finish. I can work shimmery glosses though. ^_^

Just came across Paris' great money-saving, appreciate-what-ya-got idea of "shopping in your stash". Now if only I didn't have all this new stuff to review....

Nikki: Unfortunately, the silicones in leave-in conditioner break me out! =( So yay for synthetics!

Beetrice: I'll be a good girl and try to find something old to re-appreciate =D

Huh? The brushes get split ends too? Alamak. Thank goodness I use mostly synthetic-haired brushes! :P

Hey Kahani, would you mind changing my link to using good facial cotton to: http://www.beautyholicsanonymous.com/2008/10/using-good-facial-cotton/ instead? I've changed to Wordpress and the links are now different. Much obliged :D

Tine: done! Thanks for the heads up. Had no idea your links had all changed. =) And yes until Syen pointed it out, I had no idea!

LOL. Until I SAW my beloved #129 with split-ends, I didn't know either! =P

But seriously, I don't quite get it. Brushes get split-ends too? Way weird.

Maybe I should blog about it. LOL.

Syen: now I think about it (hindsight bias and all that) it does make sense. We get split ends, and we don't rub our hairs on a daily basis. Granted no one blow-dries their brushes...

The hair on my synthetic-hair brushes have been turning wavy after a wash lately. Does anyone have this problem?

Eli: did you wash it in hot water? They'd melt... or maybe it's how you're drying it?

Cold water, mostly. Only the concealer brushes get a warm water bath. Then I hang them upside in my bathroom to dry overnight.

I took another look and so far, only my EDM flat top and baby buki brushes are affected. Still working fine for now though. Hmm.
